Project Summary

This Custom Electric Scooter Conversion is a personal project that involves transforming a pre-existing mobility scooter chassis into a fully functional electric scooter. The project began with picking out a robust, lightweight chassis (sourced from a thrift store), which I modified to accommodate a high-efficiency VEVOR 2000W brushless DC motor and a 52V 20Ah lithium-ion battery pack. The motor was mounted securely and connected to the rear wheel for direct drive, while the battery was housed within the pre-existing lead-acid battery box for protection and easy access. I integrated a motor controller to regulate speed and power, implemented a throttle for smooth acceleration and deceleration, and added safety features such as an emergency cut-off switch and regenerative braking. To ensure efficient connections, I developed a wiring harness and installed a display to monitor speed, battery level, and other essential parameters.

Throughout the project, there were many, many challenges. Space constraints, heat management, water/snow resistance, and electrical interference were some of the big ones. The completed scooter achieved a top speed of ~40mph and a range of 25 miles per charge, showing surprisingly better-than-expected performance and reliability.

Currently, I'm working on changing out the current springs in favor of hydraulic dampers. Additionally, I'm also adjusting the seat, handlebar, and grips for improved comfort and ergonomics of the project.
